The Central Highlands, a strategically significant region of South Vietnam throughout the 1960s and 1970s, is a plateau area at the southern edge of the Truong Son Mountains. Almost one million people, mainly Montagnard tribesmen, lived in the 20,000 square miles of the Central Highlands in 1968. The region was economically known for its production of coffee, tea, and vegetables.
